Air Fryer Green Tomatoes
Servings: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10-12 minutes
Total Time: 22 minutes
Ingredients:
3-4 medium green tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt, divided
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon milk
1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Cooking spray or olive oil spray
Instructions:
Prepare the Tomatoes:
Start by slicing the green tomatoes into even slices, about 1/4 inch thick. Try to keep the thickness consistent for even cooking.
Lightly salt the slices with about 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and let them sit for 5 minutes. This will help draw out some of the moisture.
Set Up the Breading Station:
In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, half of the salt, and black pepper.
In a second bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until well combined.
In a third bowl, mix the Panko breadcrumbs, paprika, garlic powder, and the remaining salt.
Bread the Tomatoes:
Dredge each tomato slice in the flour mixture, ensuring both sides are coated. Shake off any excess flour.
Dip the floured tomato slice into the egg mixture, letting any excess drip off.
Finally, coat the slice in the Panko breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to ensure the crumbs stick well. Repeat with all slices.
Air Fry the Tomatoes:
Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes.
Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or lightly brush it with olive oil to prevent sticking.
Arrange the breaded tomato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd—cook in batches if necessary.
Air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the tomatoes are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
Serve and Enjoy:
Remove the tomatoes from the air fryer and let cool slightly. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
Pro Tips:
Avoid Sogginess: Make sure to pat the tomatoes dry before breading to reduce moisture and ensure a crispy crust.
Double Coating: For an extra crispy crust, repeat the breading steps for a second layer of coating before air frying.
Batch Cooking: Overcrowding can make the breading soggy rather than crisp. Cook in batches if necessary, ensuring there’s enough space for air to circulate around each slice.
Seasoning Variations: Add some cayenne pepper to the breadcrumb mixture for a bit of
heat, or mix in Italian seasoning for extra flavor.
Serving Suggestions:
Appetizer: Serve with a creamy dipping sauce like ranch, remoulade, or a spicy mayo for an easy and tasty appetizer.
Sandwich: Use the air-fried green tomatoes as a filling in a sandwich or burger for added crunch and flavor.
Southern-Style Plate: Pair with other Southern favorites like fried catfish, cornbread, or coleslaw for a complete meal. Air Fryer Green Tomatoes
